Ulysses S. Grant saved Grand Tower, or Tower Rock, or Devil's Tower, the island, from the dynamiters when other obstructions in the river at this place were removed to facilitate river traffic. The current is swift here, and Grand Tower causes challenges such as whirlpools to tow pilots.
